Medical students go on daylong fast over quota issue

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Undergraduate medical students expressed support for their counterparts in New Delhi by staging a daylong fast outside the Bangalore Medical College (BMC) here on Friday. The students are protesting against the proposal to increase reservation for students from Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutions of higher education.

Undergraduate students of the college have boycotted classes since Thursday. Interns and postgraduate students have staged a "silent protest" and are wearing black badges, Venugopal, president of the Junior Doctors' Association of BMC, said.

Dr. Venugopal said more concessions should not be extended to students from OBCs. But they could be given financial assistance, he added.

On Saturday, students of private medical colleges in the State are likely to join the protest. They plan to take out a march to the Raj Bhavan and submit a memorandum to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi, Dr. Venugopal said.
