DEHRA DUN: The urgent need to conserve the Himalayan Mahaseer before it goes extinct in the region has been underlined by the Zoology Department of the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. The Himalayan Mahaseer population in the Ganga has gone down considerably due to obstructions created by river valley projects on their way to the breeding grounds in the higher areas, excessive fishing and its low breeding and slow growth rate, Prakash Nautiyal, Reader at the varsity told press persons here on Friday. The worst was yet to come, as the fish will lose a major breeding ground in river Nayar once the dam in Kodiyala near Rishikesh gets completed. A project Himalayan Mahaseer should be launched on the lines of the Project Tiger, Dr Nautiyal said.
