NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to reply to a public interest litigation accusing it of supplying unhygienic food to passengers on running trains across the country. After preliminary hearing of the PIL filed by Varun Goswami, a Delhi High Court lawyer, a Division Bench comprising Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Reva Khetra directed the Corporation, entrusted with the task of supplying food to passengers on running trains, to file a reply to the allegation. The condition prevailing in base kitchens and other cooking units of Indian Railways was highly deplorable and unhygienic, the petition alleged.
Kitchen staff
The Railways had failed to set up modern and sanitized kitchens and the kitchen staff was not properly trained and educated to perform their duties, the petition alleged. The Railways had not framed rules and guidelines to maintain a hygienic condition in its base kitchens, the petitioner alleged. The petitioner urged the Court to direct the Railways to modernise their kitchens and supply quality food to their passengers.
