NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Saket, Vijay Jolly, along with the local residents' welfare associations met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday and sought her help in converting the almost defunct Saket Cultural Club premises into a multi-purpose sports and recreational community centre with a huge green park. Interestingly, former Mayor Satbir Singh is the president of the Club. He has faced allegations of wrongdoing and failure to hold elections despite his term having ended last year. Mr. Jolly had protested against the manner in which Mr. Singh was running the affairs of the Club last year also. Subsequently, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished encroachments and illegal structures at the Club. Mr. Jolly said the Club had also encroached upon a DDA park in the vicinity and with active connivance of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and DDA officials built an office, a guest house and a swimming pool. The Club has incurred huge losses and has run into arrears with the civic agencies. Mr. Jolly said the Club was of no use to the residents of the area and had outlived its utility and therefore it should be converted into a community centre with a green area having various recreational facilities. He also announced sanction of Rs. 10 lakhs from his MLA Development Fund for construction of a community centre at the Club premises so that the residents could effectively use it. Mr. Jolly said the Chief Minister assured him that all possible action would be taken to ensure that people of the area get the benefit of the Club. He also said that the Chief Minister had agreed to consider his request for an escalator foot-over bridge between Saket J Block and Haus Rani Park on M.B. Road.
