A panel discussion on new awakening

  • `Old equations no longer apply in that country and new dynamics have been set in motion'
  • `The 12-point agreement is a breakthrough for the future of Nepal and South Asia'

NEW DELHI: Stating that there is a new public awakening and galvanisation in Nepal, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said on Thursday that the old equations no longer apply in that country and new dynamics have been set in motion.

"A new chapter will open for Nepal, which will be a very different one and it would require fine-tuning between the Maoists and the political parties,'' he said at a panel discussion on "Nepal: Challenges Ahead" organised by Indian Women Press Corps. Mr. Yechury pointed out that many lives have been lost and sacrifices made and the process should not be hijacked. "It is now irreversible. If this roadmap is disturbed, then Nepal will slip into violence and anarchy,'' he said."The 12-point agreement was a breakthrough for the future of Nepal and South Asia,'' he saidStating that if the Maoists give up their ten-year struggle in Nepal, then it would give Indian Maoists a reason to engage in the democratic process if they give up their arms, former Ambassador to Nepal Deb Mukharji said what had been happening in Nepal in the past three weeks was a unique demonstration of people's power.

Professor Mahendra P. Lama of the School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here, said India had made mistakes in the past five years. "We were never clear about our policy in Nepal. On the one hand we gave arms to the army and on the other we invited failed political and most exposed leaders. We arrested Maoists cadres and banned Nepalese organisations,'' he added.
