Tonsils surgery less painful now
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Now, tonsillectomy or removing tonsils in the throat to pre-empt recurrent enlargement is less painful for patients, a majority of whom are children.
Ultrasonic scalpels provide a completely bloodless surgery with a much reduced pain quotient.
The new treatment has been introduced at KKR ENT Hospital and Research Institute.
"There is no need for hospitalisation and patients can return home in a few hours after surgery," said Ravi Ramalingam, managing director of the hospital. Children with troublesome tonsils suffer from various problems ranging from recurrent throat pain and fever to pain in swallowing, cough and breathing difficulty. Prolonged tonsils problem can even lead to underperformance at school or work and affect proper food intake.
Enlarged tonsils is also common causing sleep disorders in children. Repeated interruptions in the breathing cycle during night sleep can largely affect daytime behaviour. Sleep apnoea is also linked to heart and blood pressure problems, and in children, to slow growth and will require a tonsillectomy operation.
