VISAKHAPATNAM: The siege to a private port site at Gangavaram by fishermen under the aegis of Gangavaram Matsyakarula Aikya Vedika continued on the second day on Friday. More fishermen joined the protest, cooked food and expressed their resentment at the site. Hundreds of fishermen took part in the protest. Eight tents were erected to accommodate the agitating fishermen, according to CPI(M) leader Subba Rao. He said no work on the port took place. The protest would be continued.
Novel protest
The fishermen under the aegis of GMAV have resorted to the novel protest seeking a rehabilitation and resettlement package to those affected by the construction of the port. CPI leader and former MLA Manam Anjaneyulu said at the protest site that the siege would continue till the impasse was resolved.
Delegation to YSR
He said that Commercial Taxes Minister Konathala Ramakrishna's statements were not helping in resolving the issue. While reiterating the technical feasibility of constructing a jetty at Nallamaremmapatalu, CPI(M) district secretary Ch. Narsinga Rao said that the Chief Minister responded positively when a delegation met him on Thursday. The Chief Minister said that he would intervene and do justice to the fishermen. The delegation comprised CPI(M) floor leader in the Assembly Nomula Narsimhaiah, L. Balakrishna of A.P. Matsyakarula and Matsyakarmikula Sangham and Mr. Narsinga Rao. At a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Narsinga Rao alleged that the Commercial Taxes Minister was trying to drive a wedge between the aikya vedika and all-party forum.
