TANSI cases: Government should pay fees, says HC

CHENNAI:
The Special Public Prosecutor and junior advocates who had conducted the TANSI land deals cases against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the Madras High Court shall be paid their fees by the Tamil Nadu Government within four weeks, the Madras High Court has ordered. The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Prabha Sridevan gave the direction on Friday when a writ petition filed by the former Advocate-General and the SPP for the case, K.V. Venkatapathi, came up for hearing. The team has claimed the balance sum of Rs. 19.3 lakh as fees for having conducted 17 appeals in High Court. Mr. Venkatapathi, assisted by six court-approved juniors, conducted the case from October 1, 2001 to December 4, 2001, when the orders were pronounced.
A fee bill amounting to Rs. 28.77 lakh was submitted to the Government in November 2001.
