HYDERABAD: V. Archana of Hyderabad will take part in the Enka Junior 2006 ITF juniors tennis tournament in Istanbul (Turkey) from May 15 to 20, according to a press release here. The 14-year-old girl will also compete in the Ted-Istanbul ITF junior tennis tournament at the same place from May 22 to 27. Currently ranked India's No.2 and No.4 in the under-14 and under-16 categories respectively, Archana won the under-16 singles title in the AITA Super Series edition in Kolkata on Friday. She was also the champion in the same age group in the AITA National series tournament in Delhi. This promising player had also triumphed in the fifth UAE ITF junior championship doubles final in Abu Dhabi in January this year.
Boston Cup cricket
The seventh Boston Cup day and night cricket tournament for schools will be organised by the Boston Mission High School (Tadban) from May 1. The event is sponsored by Sports Coaching Foundation (Masab Tank). About 100 teams will take part in the tournament, which features competitions in the age groups of 11 to 17 years. Hyderabad wins
volleyball title
Hyderabad won the 12th A.P. mini inter-district volleyball championship defeating Medak 28-26, 25-9 in the final at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Saturday. Rohan Prasad, Mahesh and Laxman combined well for the winner while Shivprasad and Harish Kumar put up a good show for Medak. Former international Nandan Singh gave away the prizes. Other results: Semifinals: Hyderabad bt Warangal 25-14, 25-23; Medak bt Anantapur 25-22, 25-20. Third place: Anantapur bt Warangal 25-18, 25-27, 29-27.
Big win for The Hindu
A fine knock by C.M. Srikanth (60) helped The Hindu record an eight-wicket win over Veva and enter the final of the SAAP Cup corporate cricket tournament at the Lal Bahadur Stadium. Batting first, Veva scored 132 for four in 20 overs with Rajesh (47) being the top-scorer. In reply, The Hindu romped home thanks to Srikanth's aggressive batting. In the other semifinal, Nuclear Fuel Complex scored a comfortable 55-run over Maa TV. The scores: Veva 132 for four in 20 overs (Rajesh 47) lost to The Hindu 133 for two in 17 overs (C.M. Srikanth 60, Faiz Ahmed 40); NFC 158 for three in 20 overs (Parmesh 53, M.V.N. Raju 54) bt Maa TV 103 in 18.5 overs.
Gudivada scores win
Gudivada boys and Telagaladeevi girls finished third in the boys and girls sections respectively in the Schools Games kho kho competitions held at C. K.Nayudu sports arenas at Swaraj Maidan in Vijayawada on Saturday. Gudivada boys defeated Machilipatnam 6-5, while Telagaladeevi girls beat Gudivada 6-5.
Cricket academy's gesture
The JP Cricket Coaching Academy in Akkayyapalem will provide free coaching to the pupils of Municipal Corporation and Zilla Parishad high schools. Coaching would be imparted at four places at Visakhapatnam. This is meant to spot and nurture talent in the financially backward sections. Meanwhile, the academy will organise a two-month summer camp for school children in its premises. Interested can contact the academy for details.
Semifinalists spotted
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi and Punjab girls entered the semifinals of the 51st National School Games basketball tournament at Guntur on Saturday. In a closely fought encounter, Delhi defeated Rajashtan 48-46, while host Andhra Pradesh bowed out to Maharashtra 38-12. The results: Quarterfinals (girls): Punjab 48 bt Chattisgarh 23; Karnataka 34 bt Gujarat 24; Maharashtra 38 bt Andhra Pradesh 12; Delhi 48 bt Rajasthan 46.
Coaching camp
Railway Golf Club will organise free coaching camp from May 1 to 20 at the Iriset Golf Course, Hyderabad. The camp will be in the evenings and further details can be had from Ph: 9391200066.
Tennis championship
The National inter-State under-18 tennis championship for boys and girls will be held at the NTA Complex in Gurgaon from May 1 to 5. It will be on a league cum knock-out basis.
