VISAKHAPATNAM: Heavy and swirling winds swept the city and some parts of the district late on Saturday afternoon. There were small showers at some places. For the second consecutive day hot and humid morning hours turned into cool late afternoons, but on Saturday people saw a sudden change in the climate as the swirling winds caught them unawares. According to reports, an unidentified person driving a scooter was seriously injured and fell unconscious when a tree branch fell on him at Karasa.
Saved by helmet
A person driving a motorcycle and the pillion rider escaped with minor injuries when a tree branch fell on them as they were going on the road between Rama Talkies and Swarna Bharati stadium. The motorcycle rider was lucky as he was wearing a helmet, by-standers said. No major damage to agriculture was reported so far on Saturday. However, mango and other crops suffered heavy damage in some mandals due to heavy wind and rains on Friday afternoon. "This thunderstorm activity is not unusual during summer months and they are temporary and would also fizzle out quickly," said the Director of Cyclone Warning Centre V. Subrahmanyam. ``Due to the upper air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, upto 0.9 km above the sea level, moisture incursion and high temperature, thunderstorm activity develops during evenings. Sometimes rains are also experienced. Such an activity over interior areas like Telangana will result in hailstorms,'' he said.
