CHENNAI : The National Conference on Astronomy and Planetarium Science, NATCAPS 2006, started at the Birla Planetarium.

Anuj Sinha, adviser and head, National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Union Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, said that India had an important history of astronomy. Scientists attached to planetariums must educate the public on the subject and create interest among students.

He said more courses in astronomy were needed. Software development was another area that needed attention, Mr. Sinha said. "There should also be a constituency for higher allocation of funds for research and development.
