This Day That Age
The Government of India have decided that the Indian Coinage (Amendment) Act, 1955, introducing the decimal system of coinage in the country, should be brought into force with effect from April 1, 1957. As from that date, coins of the denominations of one naya paisa, two naya paise, five naya paise and ten naya paise will be issued. These will be followed, at a subsequent date, by the issue of the higher denomination coins, viz., the 25 and 50 naya paise coins, corresponding respectively to the existing quarter and half rupee. The existing coins will, however, continue to be legal tender and will circulate side by side with the new coins until they are gradually withdrawn.
