Staff Correspondent

Demands his resignation from Rajya Sabha

  • Youth Congress activists take out procession in Davangere
  • Congress demands that Venkaiah Naidu apologise to people for his remarks on Cauvery issue

DAVANGERE: The Davangere district unit of the Congress and the Youth Congress took out a procession in the city on Saturday in protest against the remarks of Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu on Cauvery waters issue.

The protesters staged a dharna in front of the city municipality office. They burnt an effigy of the BJP leader. The Congress has demanded that Mr. Naidu should resign from Rajya Sahba and apologise to the people of Karnataka.

Congress district unit general secretary and councillor D. Basavaraj said that Mr. Naidu, who had been elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, had betrayed the people of the State by supporting Tamil Nadu on the issue.

Congress district unit president Abdul Jabbar said that the BJP legislators, who had voted for Mr. Naidu during the Rajya Sabha elections, should resign to show solidarity with Kannadigas.

He cautioned that if Mr. Naidu failed to apologise to the people of Karnataka, the Congress would "gherao" him whenever he visited the State.

Davangere City Municipality president Shivanahalli Ramesh and Youth Congress leader Dinesh K. Shetty took part in the agitation.
