Call to improve basic infrastructure in schools Jagadish Shettar stresses the need for improvement of basic infrastructure in schools

Belgaum: Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar has asked officials to regularly monitor the implementation of Centrally-sponsored Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme.

Presiding over a meeting of SSA Implementation Committee here on Saturday, he stressed the need for improvement of basic infrastructure in schools, such as classrooms, toilets and compound walls.

He also advised them to explore the possibilities of equipping schools with computers.

Mr. Shettar, who is also district in-charge Minister, said the Government had sanctioned a total of Rs. 52 crore for implementation of the scheme, including construction of 57 new school buildings.

Funds for construction

The Government would spend Rs. 10 lakh for construction of each school. Of the Rs.29 crore sanctioned for the preceding financial year 2005-06, the Government had released Rs. 25 crore so far.

About 98 per cent of the target had already been achieved, he said.

He said the Government had accorded approval for construction of 1,066 additional classrooms in the two educational districts of Chikkodi and Belgaum. The request was for 1666 classrooms.

Programme for girlchild

A special programme, under which 34 cluster schools would be opened to provide education to girl child, would be started.

At least 100 dropout girls would be admitted to sixth, seventh and eighth standards in each school with boarding facility, he said.
