NEW DELHI: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed shock and grief over the killing of Indian engineer K. Suryanarayana in Afghanistan by the Taliban. In his message, Mr. Kalam expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and assured them of all assistance. Describing it as an inhuman act, he said the killing was highly condemnable, according to the President's press secretary, S.M. Khan. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the killing and appealed to the people to remain together in the fight against terrorism. He spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee joined the nation in condemning the killing of Suryanarayana. Describing it as a "cold blooded killing that is against all civilised values," the Communist Party of India (Marxist) conveyed its heartfelt condolences to his wife and family members.
Sonia condemns
UNI reports: Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the world as a whole should condemn the ``dastardly act'' against humanity. ``The killing is nothing but an act of cowardice,'' she said in a statement. She conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family of Suryanarayana.
Karunanidhi expresses shock
Special Correspondent reports from Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said on Sunday that he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to expedite the process of handing over the body of the Indian engineer Suryanarayana, killed in Afghanistan, to his family in India. In a statement here, he expressed shock over the killing and offered his condolences to Suryanarayana's family. Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy condemned the killing and wanted the Indian Government to "retaliate for this killing of an innocent citizen."
"Enemies of Afghanistan"
AP reports from Kandahar: Afghan president Hamid Karzai condemned Suryanarayana's killing and blamed "enemies of Afghanistan" for the incident.
