Chalapathi is new HCA joint secretary

HYDERABAD: D.S. Chalapathi was elected the new joint-secretary of the Hyderabad Cricket Association in the elections held to various posts (except for that of secretary and president) here on Sunday.

Chalapathi, who enters the 30th year in the HCA in various capacities, defeated his nearest rival Venkateswaran of Indian Airlines by 53 votes.

Former Ranji player M.V. Sridhar was elected one of the three vice-presidents, while P. Yadgiri retained the treasurer's post.

The rival group, headed by M. Ranga Reddy, P.R. Man Singh and Arshad Ayub combine, put up a dismal show, winning only one of the three vice-president's posts (Narender Goud) and joint secretaryship (D.S. Chalapathi).

In the Executive Committee, Surender Kumar Agarwal was the only notable winner from their group.

The ruling combine, headed by M.V. Sridhar and supported by secretary N. Shivlal Yadav swept all the other posts.

Newly elected office-bearers: Joint secretary: D.S. Chalapathi. Vice-presidents: M.V. Sridhar, S.L. Venkatapathi Raju, M. Narender Goud. Treasurer: P. Yadgiri.

Executive Committee members: `A' Division: Naresh Sharma, Prakash Chand Jain, Peter Gomez, Amarnath, Vidyuth Jaisimha, Kanwaljit Singh.

`B' Division: D. Kishan Rao, E. Gopal. `C' Division: K. John Manoj, R.Vijayanand. `D' Division: K. Bhanu Prasad, Surender Kumar Agarwal.

Snehit, Soumya triumph

Snehit of St. Paul's High School and Soumya of Wesley High School won the 4km road race for under-10 boys and girls respectively in the Hyderabad 10K Road Races here on Sunday.

Results: Men: 5km: 1. Shahnawaz (Hyd, 15:10.00 seconds); 2. Santosh (Hyd); 3. Vidyasagar (SAI).

Boys: 4km (under-16): 1. K. Srinivas (RRC, 14:14.00 secs); 2. Sk. Khaleel (Hyd 10K); 3. Mukesh (Hyd 10K). (Under-13): 1. Pradeep (Hyd 10K, 17:18.00 secs); 2. Praveen (Hyd 10K); 3. Rahul (Hyd 10K). Spinners camp

Former Test spinner S.L. Venkatapathi Raju inaugurated the three-week Mumtaz Hussain spinners camp organised by Sports Coaching Foundation (Masab Tank) here. About 40 young slow bowlers will be trained by experts daily.

K. Sai Baba, general secretary, SCF, presented a purse of Rs. 10,000 to former Ranji star Abdul Hai and also felicitated Mumtaz Hussain.

Training Command wins

Training Command won the overall championship in the 56th Air Force aquatics championship, which concluded at Dundigul near here.

Important results: All winners: 100m backstroke: Srihari (Maintenance Command, 1:20.06 seconds). 100m breaststroke: N.S. Singh (Training Command, 1:23.01 secs). 100m freestyle: Roji Xavier (Air Headquarters, 1:03.92 secs). 4x100m medley relay: Training Command (5:13.57 secs).

Prasad new APCA chief

Maj. Shiva Prasad has been unanimously elected president of the Andhra Pradesh Chess Association at it's General Body Meeting here on Sunday. Eighteen affiliated District units attended the meeting.

Hockey player dead

Hyderabad Hockey Association expressed condolences to the bereaved family members of S. Suresh, former State player who passed away in Bangalore. Suresh represented Allwyns and Coronation Clubs in the local league.
