700 acres for Simhadri project expansion

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD : The State Government has agreed to allot 700 acres for the expansion programme of the Simhadri project of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) near Visakhapatnam.

Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked Visakhapatnam Collector, A.K. Singhal, to follow up the matter after a meeting with NTPC Chairman and Managing Director, T. Sankaralingam, here on Sunday. Dr. Reddy urged Mr. Sankaralingam to expand the capacity of the project by more than 1,300 MW, a press release said.

Dr. Reddy informed the NTPC chief that the Centre had responded positively to his request for a 4,000 MW power project at Krishnapatnam. This would be in addition to a mega project of Andhra Pradesh Genco there.

The Chief Minister also said the first unit of the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project (stage II with a capacity of 420 MW) would be commissioned in August and the second unit by November. The State will add 5,445 MW to its installed capacity in the Eleventh Plan (April 2007 to 2012). The present capacity is 11,151 MW.
