One killed in landslip

KOLLAM: A 37-year-old man was killed when a portion of a hillock caved in at Edamala in Kundara on Sunday. The deceased, identified by the police as Shyam Kumar, along with a few other workers was engaged in removing sand from the hill to be used for real estate purposes. Three other workers who were injured in the accident have been admitted to a hospital here. The Kundara police have registered a case.n — Staff Reporter

Sahithya Akademi anniversary

THRISSUR: Writer Keki N. Daruwala will inaugurate the 50th anniversary celebrations and the annual award presentation function of the Kerala Sahithya Akademi on May 4. According to a release received issued on Sunday from the Akademi, the three-day meet will have special sessions to remember prominent Malayalam writers. The Akademi Fellowship will be presented on the concluding day on May 6. — Staff Reporter

B.Ed. exam: index marks published

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The index mark of candidates who have applied for the B.Ed. entrance examination has been published on the website `cee-kerala.org,' said the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. FNS Mistral calls at Kochi

KOCHI: FNS Mistral, an amphibious assault helicopter carrier of the French Navy, called at Kochi on Saturday. FNS Mistral has been berthed at the Ernakulam Wharf of the Cochin Port Trust. The ship can carry a maximum of 900 soldiers. — Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Red Cross Society unit in Thiruvalla will conduct a free eye camp in cooperation with the Aravind Hospital, Thirunelveli, at the Municipal Town Hall in Thiruvalla on May 6, according to society secretary M.P. Gopalakrishnan. - Staff Reporter

CPI leader dead

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kadakampally Mohanan, State council member and Thiruvananthapuram district executive member of the Communist Party of India (CPI), died at the Regional Cancer Centre here on Sunday. He was 49. He is survived by his wife, Omana, and two daughters. In a condolence message, CPI State secretary Veliyam Bharghavan said that the death of Kadakampally Mohanan, a dedicated public worker and an efficient party organiser, was a big loss to the party and the Left Democratic Front. - Special Correspondent

Course for children

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mediact, an organisation engaged in media education, is organising a Media Education Course for high school students this summer. There will be 20 sessions on newspaper, television and new media in the six-day course to be held from May 4 to 9, at SCM programme centre, Pattom.

Hurt in accident

Thiruvananthapuram: Twenty persons were injured when a trekker running parallel services overturned near Vembayam on Sunday morning. Two of the injured, Vimalkumar, 18, and Balakrishna Pillai, 70, both residents of Vembayam, have been admitted to the Medical College hospital, while the rest are under observation at the MCH casualty. - Staff Reporter

Cooking contest held

KOZHIKODE: The Jaycerette Wing of the Jaycees Calicut conducted a cooking contest of vegetarian rice dishes at Hotel Renaissance here on Saturday. There were as many as 23 entries, comprising different varieties of pulaos, biryanis and other rice dishes. Manish Premchandra won the first prize for `jeera' rice, Nachal the second prize for mango rice, and Zerveen the third prize for vegetable biryani. Fousia Mubashir and Ranjit were the judges. — Staff Reporter

Pedestrian run over

THRISSUR: S. Shelly (35) of Anandapuram was run over by a car when he was walking along the road with his wife Viji at Amballur near here on Sunday. Ms. Viji, who was injured in the accident, has been hospitalised. — Staff Reporter
