Festival of western classical music

KOZHIKODE: Music Festival 2006, a rendition of western classical music, will be conducted at the Town Hall here on May 13 and 14 by Harmony Calicut, a cultural organisation.

The objective is to encourage students of western classical music and provide them a platform and opportunity to showcase their skills.

The students will render the compositions of renowned classical musicians such as John Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven.

Besides, the music festival will also feature renditions from popular compositions of other musicians.

The initiative is also expected to be a first step towards reintroducing western classical music among the general public, Harmony Calicut general convener Paul Vijayan and secretary K. Devadas said.

Music teachers of yesteryears including Benjamin Peter, Henry Abbiya and Reddy Milton will be remembered on the occasion.

People from the cultural field will participate in the inaugural session.

Chairman of Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi C.L. Jose, Director of Akashavani, Kozhikode, C.P. Rajasekharan, Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri and writer P.K. Gopi will participate.
