Fix timeframe for reservation

Sir, — The intensity with which anti-reservation agitation is spreading does not augur well for the State and society. The issue needs an objective examination. Reservation policy has been in vogue for a long period. But reservation at higher levels of learning was facilitated with amendment to the Constitution. This was approved by all political parties. There is no meaning in medical students trying to break this constitutional guarantee. Reservation for centuries is not a healthy feature. As B.R. Ambedkar said, it should be for a limited period. I feel that a timeframe should be fixed with no provision for further extension.

Irregular service

Sir, — After several pleas, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has restored an express service on route No 243 between Vidyamanyanagar and Shivajinagar. However, the second trip from Vidyamanyanagar to Kempe Gowda Bus Stand scheduled to start at 10.30 a.m. on this route is irregular. Enquiries revealed that because of poor collection, this service is not operated. Similarly, the service is irregular on route No 243E because the BMTC drafts the bus for casual contract. Being a service-oriented organisation, BMTC should not divert buses plying on the outskirts of the city.

Allow LPG cars

Sir, — I understand that the Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) are not endorsing the Certificate of Registration (RC) book if a car is registered before 1992. Old cars cause greater air pollution than the new vehicles. These cars should be run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which can drastically reduce pollution. The Transport Department should allow renewal of fitness certificate for old vehicles on the condition that they should be run on LPG and not petrol or diesel.

Garbage bins

Sir, — The decision of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to remove garbage bins was hasty. The pourakarmikas collect garbage from door-to-door once a day. After that the residents throw garbage on the road. Perhaps, the BMP should re-install the garbage bins and simultaneously ban plastic bags.
