BANGALORE: The State Government proposes to rename Gulbarga University after the 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara, and the Bijapur-based Women's University after Akkamahadevi, Chief Minister, H.D. Kumaraswamy said here on Sunday.

The matter will be placed before the Cabinet and a decision will be taken at the earliest, he said addressing a function to mark Basava Jayanti here.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Government was keen on translating Basaveshwara's "Vachana Sahitya" into all Indian languages.

The principles preached by the social reformer through his vachanas were relevant to all times.

Addressing a function organised by Basava Vedike, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the State Government would soon convene a meeting of experts and officials concerned to resolve various pending issues in higher education, including the Common Entrance Test imbroglio.

The Chief Minister said the Government would implement the recommendations of experts to make higher education meaningful in the State.

Retired Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court V.S. Malimath was presented the "Basavashree" award, while the former Minister Leeladevi R. Prasad and Bangalore Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh were honoured with "Vachana Sahitya Shree" awards on the occasion.
