Delhi Zoo loses its oldest hippo

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Zoo lost its oldest female hippopotamus on Saturday due to internal haemorrhage and secondary infection. The female hippo was injured over 25 days ago after being attacked by its male offspring. Saved due to timely intervention by the keepers, the animal, however, sustained extensive injuries all over the body and stopped eating about two weeks ago.

The animal, according to zoo authorities, had serious internal injuries and had development infections and died on Saturday around 6 a.m. A post mortem has been conducted and the animal buried.

"We had sought help from Singapore and Hyderabad Zoos to nurse the animal back to health. The hippo had been shifted to a special enclosure for treatment. The 43-year-old female hippo has, however, outlived the normal life span that is anything between 35 to 40 years," said a zoo official.

Three arrested with duplicate inlay cards

NEW DELHI: Three men were arrested by the Special Staff of the North-East Delhi police this Saturday for allegedly printing and supplying duplicate inlay cards of audiocassettes and video compact discs of prominent companies. The police recovered fake inlay cards worth more than Rs. 22 lakhs from them.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police D.C. Srivastava, the Special Staff received a tip-off on Saturday that fake inlay cards were being printed in the Shastri Park area of Seelampur. Subsequently, a police team raided the place and arrested one Rajesh Kakkar from there. The raiding party recovered duplicate inlay cards of recently released movies.

At his instance, the police arrested Devender and Intezar Ahmed who used to print the inlay cards for him at Ghonda. The offset printing machine has been seized.

During interrogation, Rajesh allegedly revealed that he was into the business of duplicate inlay cards for the past one decade. Earlier he repaired wristwatches at Lajpat Rai Market, but lured by the prospect of making huge profit, he began supplying inlay cards to Punjab and Haryana.

Efforts are on to identify his clients.

Hunger strike enters 18th day

New Delhi: The relay hunger strike by Congress MLAs to protest against the sealing of shops in Delhi entered 18th day on Sunday.

Congress MLA from Pahar Ganj Anjali Rai extended her support against the sealing drive and sat on the relay hunger strike along with thousands of Congress workers and local citizens.

Among the MLAs present during the strike on Sunday were former DPCC president MLA Subhash Chopra, Prahlad Singh Sahni, Kiran Walia, Narendra Nath, Rajesh Lilothia, Mateen Ahmed, Naseeb Singh, Rajesh Jain, Kanwar Karan Singh, Amrish Singh Gautam and Anjali Sood, a DPCC release said.

Ms. Rai, during her address, said the sealing drive rendered lakhs of people jobless and prompt action was needed to halt the drive.
