NEW DELHI: Sharing the concern of a stunned nation at the killing of Hyderabad engineer K. Suryanarayana by the Taliban, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Monday called upon the global community to collectively devise a mechanism to ensure that such situations did not recur for any citizen of any country. "The cruel incident in Afghanistan has resulted in the loss of a precious engineer's life, resulting in the loss of smile on the faces of his family including his three small children. The nation is with them in this time of grief.'' Many countries, including India, were facing such situations. ``There are certain people in certain societies who are violent and they do not follow any rule of law, they do not abide by any code of conduct. The light of conscience is extinguished in them,'' he said referring to the Taliban militia. Mr. Kalam was speaking at the presentation here of the Kabir Puraskar and the National Communal Harmony Award for 2005.
Communal Harmony award
Even where India took action against terrorists through political, military and police methods, ``we have not been able to find the solution in full and the solutions are evading. In all our actions, I believe, we have to consider injection of certain higher elements.'' Apart from finding military, diplomatic and social solutions for containing terrorism and violence, efforts should be made to encourage good human beings and enlightened citizens across the world to intervene in ``such problems to bring universal peace and harmony.'' The communal harmony award was presented to Hema Bharali and the Ramakrishna Mission represented by Swami Smaranananda. The Kabir Puraskar was given to Mohammad Aynal Hoque and K. Rajarathnam Isaac for promoting peace and tranquillity in their regions.
