News Analysis
Who is Chitra Lekha Yadav, asks a reader. In "Parliament reconvenes in Nepal" (April 29, 2006, page 1), the text said she is the Deputy Speaker, while the caption of the accompanying AP photograph stated that she is the Speaker of the Nepalese Parliament. Siddharth Varadarajan clarifies that she is the Deputy Speaker. In "Master check-up for the old irrelevant?" (Chennai city, April 30, 2006, page 4), a reader points out that the text mentions "uric acid as a test for kidney function". A consultant urologist, he says it should have been "blood urea" and that the writer should have included "serum creatinine" which is a better test than "blood urea". With reference to "What's in a name?" ("Assembly Elections 2006", April 25, 2006), a reader has doubts on the use of nom de guerre in the text. (The article was on how the leaders of most political parties in Tamil Nadu are better known by pseudonyms than their real names.) Nom de guerre are pseudonyms adopted by resistance fighters, terrorists and guerrillas. The expression nom de guerre (or "name of war") is rarely, if ever, actually used in French. In this article, the usage could have been in the sense that it is a battle (of ballots), though it may be stretching it a little.
