COLOMBO: At least seven persons were killed and eight injured in suspected LTTE attacks in eastern Sri Lanka on Monday, the army said. The "LTTE activated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) fixed on a stationary bicycle parked by the wayside" in Trincomalee town, said the Defence Ministry. "Four civilians travelling in an auto rickshaw and a sailor died on the spot. Another sailor was injured as a result of the terrorist blast." Two civilians were killed in the Weli Oya region. "Armed LTTE men attacked and killed two civilians and injured three others while they were going for sand collection work." The killings, particularly in the sensitive eastern districts, took place despite calls by the international community to the LTTE to stop violence and resume negotiations in Geneva to discuss ceasefire agreement implementation.
