NEW DELHI: An exhibition of paintings by Surjit Akre depicting the various colours of life opened in Open Palm Court Area of India Habitat Centre here on Monday. Titled "From My Diary", this is the 35th solo exhibition of the artist. It is open up to this coming Friday. As the title suggests, the works are autobiographical in the sense that the artist has portrayed her childhood days and also the happy and turbulent moments of her life. The present series comprises about 45 works. "There were not many forms of entertainment for children during our days. Nowadays children play with high-tech toys, while we used to make toys from clay using our bare hands," says Surjit, who also remembers the fresh smell of earth, the early morning baths in the stream and also the endless amount of mangoes she consumed. Surjit has participated in a number of art camps and exhibitions across the country and abroad. She is also the president of the Indo-Russian Roerich's Art Club. Under the banner of this club, she has organised and curated a number of programmes and helped budding artists. Born in 1954 in Punjab, Surjit received her post-graduate degree from the Academy of Arts, Repin Institute of Paintings, Sculpture and Architecture at St. Petersburg in Russia. At the national level, Surjit participated in All-India Women's Art Exhibition organised by Sahitya Kala Parishad in 1986. She also participated in the Annual Art Exhibition organised by Sahitya Kala Parishad in 1988 and 1992, 33rd National Exhibition of Lalit Kala Akademi in 1989 and 1990 and the 12th Annual Exhibition organised by Gallery Ganesha in 2001. At the international level, the artist displayed her works at St. Petersburg in 1978 and 1985. In Moscow, her pieces of art were showcased at an exhibition organised by the Russian Cultural Centre, while her paintings were displayed at the Contemporary Indian Paintings Exhibition in Germany in 2000.
