Beginning of the end for BJP, says Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday predicted that the formation of the Bharatiya Janashakti Party by Uma Bharti was the "beginning of the end" for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The party said the development had created intense confusion among the people since there was one party that had embarked upon endless yatras and another [Ms. Bharti's] party that wanted to turn the yatra of the first into its last journey.

Comparing the development to a marketing strategy of "buy one BJP and get one BJP free," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the people were aware of this blind race on communal issues and spreading disaffection and would spurn them.

The Congress also demanded an independent inquiry into the Vadodra police firing.

The party condemned the killings in Doda and described it as an "absolutely insane" act. It criticised the BJP for trying to politicise the killings.

"It is unfortunate that politics is being sdragged [into the incident]. We never did," Mr. Singhvi said.
