NEW DELHI: The former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, on Monday asked the people of West Bengal to extend their support to the Left Front and make it victorious for a seventh successive term both for the progress of the State and strengthening secularism and alternative economic policies in the country. Making the appeal both in his personal capacity and on behalf of the recently launched Jan Morcha, Mr. Singh said the Left Front in West Bengal symbolises the hopes and aspirations of the working people. The Left Front Governments, he said, had established the democratic rights of all sections and created an atmosphere of communal amity. Through the implementation of land reforms, providing security of tenure for the Barghadars, stimulating agricultural production and generating incomes for the rural people, ``West Bengal has shown that there is an alternative path to the current crisis in the agrarian economy that has gripped many parts of the country'', he said in a letter to the voters. He said there was an increase in the investment in industries and infrastructure and West Bengal was once again becoming one of the industrially advanced states in the country. The State had acquired the first position in agricultural production for two decades now. Arguing why the people should vote for the ruling coalition, Mr. Singh said it was necessary so that this work was carried forward and West Bengal marched further on the road to progress. Similarly on the national level, he said the Left was playing an important role at the Centre and the victory of the Left Front in West Bengal would ensure that the struggle for strengthening democracy, secularism and alternative economic policies was carried forward with much more vigour.
