PM urged to ignore anti-quota lobby

NEW DELHI: Indian Justice Party chief Udit Raj met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the week-end and urged him to go ahead with the proposal to provide reservation to Other Backward Classes in Central universities and institutions of higher learning.

Requesting him not to buckle under pressure of the anti-reservation lobby, Mr. Raj said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government should fully implement its Common Minimum Programme and fulfil promises made to the weaker sections of society. He also urged the Prime Minister to introduce reservations in the private sector so that Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and OBCs can get more jobs.

Speaker's plea to Sheila on water

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh has written to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit asking her to resolve the severe water crisis in his Ambedkar Nagar constituency in South Delhi.

Expressing displeasure over the poor functioning of the Delhi Jal Board, Mr. Singh said residents of his constituency had been complaining about non-supply of water for the past several days but in vain. He asked Ms. Dikshit, who also heads the DJB, to immediately take measures to end the crisis.

New scheme for garbage transportation

NEW DELHI: The Chairman of the Standing Committee of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Jai Kishan Sharma, on Monday inaugurated a public-private scheme for transportation of garbage in the Walled City area to facilitate a clean and healthier environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sharma said majority of areas in the Walled City were congested and, therefore, the sanitary conditions were found wanting. He assured that necessary funds would be provided for maintaining high standards of sanitation.

Municipal Councillor of the area Brij Mohan Sharma appealed to the citizens to segregate bio-degradable and re-cycled garbage at source so as to ensure success of this ambitious scheme.

ISO certificate for Delhi Milk Scheme

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Milk Scheme's plant at West Patel Nagar has been awarded ISO-9001-2000 Certification for quality control and the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Certification for food safety measures.

The Secretary in the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, P.M.A. Hakeem, handed over the certificates to DMS Chairman Neerja Rajkumar at a function here on Monday.

Two DMS workers were also felicitated with cash incentives of Rs.1,000 on the occasion for their exemplary work.
