Vamsadhara project renamed

HYDERABAD: The Vamsadhara project in Srikakulam district has been named after Boddepalli Rajagopala Rao, who served the area for many years and elected to the Lok Sabha from Srikakulam five times. The project hereafter will be known as Boddepalli Rajagopala Rao Project. The Government issued an order to this effect on Monday. - Special Correspondent

Trees uprooted as gales lash villages

WARANGAL: Several trees were uprooted and houses were partially damaged in Beruwada and Rangapur villages of Kesamudram mandal due to heavy winds here on Monday. According to K. Damodar Reddy, RDO, huge trees were uprooted due to gales which fell on railway track obstructing the traffic for a while in Kesamudram mandal. - Staff Reporter

Man electrocuted

Kakinada: A person Mummu Satyanarayana (42) was electrocuted while fixing the cable jock to the TV set at his house in Krishnapuram of Jaggampet mandal on Monday. He died instantaneously. - Correspondent

Plea for journalism course in degree colleges

HYDERABAD: The All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) has urged the Government to introduce journalism and communication courses in degree colleges and also PG course in all the universities. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, AIYF State general secretary G. Eashwaraiah said that it was necessary since there was a need for trained students in this sector as journalists play an important role in society building. Mr. Eashwaraiah hailed the decision to revive journalism course in Sri Venkateshwara University. -Staff Reporter

Power employees want revision in wages

HYDERABAD: The United Electricity Employees' Union has opposed 10 per cent wage hike for the employees announced by the Transco, saying the rising prices of essential commodities has not been taken into consideration. Oppose ADB meet, say Left organisations

HYDERABAD: State committees of several Left organisations have called for protests against the holding of 39th annual general body meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) here from May 3 to 6. Leaders of All-India Khet Mazdoor Sangh, Indian Federation of Trade Unions, Progressive Organisation for Women, Progressive Democratic Students' Union, Progressive Youth League and Arunodaya on Monday accused the bank of assisting private financial institutions and trying to damage PSUs and the cooperative sector. Meanwhile, CITU State Committee has criticised the ADB chief financial adviser for opposing reservations in the private sector, IIMs and IITs, dubbing his statement as an "interference" in country's internal affairs. - Special Correspondent

Bid to deny promotions to teachers flayed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation has criticised the alleged attempts of the Government and the Board of Intermediate Education to deny promotions to teachers as junior lecturers. K. Venugopal, president, and N.V. Raghavaiah, general secretary, in a statement issued here said the move was against the employees' right to get promotion on the basis of seniority. They warned that lakhs of teachers would resist such attempts. -Special Correspondent

Contract staff seeks withdrawal of orders

HYDERABAD: The United Medical and Health Employees' Union has demanded withdrawal of the orders issued by the Finance Secretary stopping DA, HRA and other allowances to contract paramedical staff who have been receiving 1999 PRC scales. Union's president M. Rangaiah in a statement here said the contract staff was receiving allowances for the last five years. - Special Correspondent

Minister coming

Srikakulam: Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao will arrive on a three-day visit of the district on Tuesday evening. The Minister will visit Vanjangi on Wednesday and call on fire victims and inaugurate flood banks of the Vamsadhara project in the evening. Eight arrested in assault case

Kakinada: Eight financiers of G. Mamidada village were arrested in connection with the attack on Income Tax officers while conducting raids to detect tax evasion. All of them were produced before the court of the Third Additional Judicial First Class Magistrates here on Monday. The names of the arrested were given by the police as Karri Venkata Reddi, Karri Jagannadha Reddy, Karri Machara Reddy, Karri Satish Kumar, Karri Veeraraghavareddy, Medapati Veera Venkata Seshareddy, Nallamilli Subbareddi and Dwarampudi Srinivasa Reddy. Kakinada: An aged woman Kambala Ammiraju (60) of Gollaprolu village allegedly doused herself with kerosene and set herself afire at her home on Sunday owing to chronic heart ailment succumbed to burns at the Government General Hospital. The Gollaprolu police registered a case. - Correspondent

Lorry bandh on May 4

Rajahmundry: Protesting against collection of mechanical tax of Rs.2,600 per lorry by the Orissa Government's Transport Department, The Godavari National Permit Lorry Owners Welfare Association has decided to observed one-day bandh from May 4 night to 5 night. In a statement on Monday, association president Chittoori Anjaneya Prasad and secretary Ch. Venkateswara Rao said that they requested the owners of other state lorry owners to cooperate in observing bandh and stop their vehicles, which are scheduled to travel through any part of Orissa. - Staff Reporter

Solidarity expressed

Rajahmundry: Sex workers, under the banner of the Godavari Mahila Samakhya took out a rally, expressing their solidarity with the working class in the city. Care India organised this rally and a representation was given to Sub-Collector K. Sasidhar. They demanded that they be given protection from goondas and other anti-social elements who were harassing them and that they be included in welfare programs. They also sought old-age pension and housing schemes for them.

Rytu sadassu today

ELURU: A rythu sadassu will be held at Exhibition Grounds here on Tuesday under the aegis of the Department of Agriculture. Forest Minister Satrucharla Vijayarama Raju will inaugurate the programme. AIDS awareness campaign

ELURU: District AIDS Control Officer Dr. Mohan Rao on Monday said the latest data revealed that the number of HIV victims had crossed 8,000 in West Godavari district. Nearly 1,600 people contracted AIDS, he added while speaking at a meeting here.
