Remand home official arrested

Probe reveals an inmate beaten up severely which led to his death

Darbhanga: Physical instructor of a remand home in Bihar's Darbhanga district has been arrested for allegedly causing the death of a juvenile inmate, a police official said on Monday. Deputy Superintendent of Police Ratanmani Sanjeev told PTI that 18-year-old Bhiku Sah, died after some of his colleagues at the orders of the instructor of the home at Laheriasarai Harishchandra Jha stuffed clothes in his mouth and beat him severely on Thursday last.

A preliminary probe was conducted into the death of Sah, he said.

Following `exposure' of the `misdeeds' of the physical instructor, he was arrested and remanded to jail on Friday last, he said. An FIR had also been lodged against him with the Lehariasarai police station.

The probe revealed that the boy was beaten up severely by three of his colleagues at the instruction of the physical trainer for refusing to sleep on the floor.

"They stuffed clothes into the mouth of the victim to suppress his cries," the DSP said.

Sah was arrested in Samastipur district on the charge of stealing a packet of cigarette and brought to the Laheriasarai-based remand home 20 months back. During a visit to the remand home last evening, District Magistrate Upendra Sharma was told by the children about the official's `misdeeds' including his alleged activities of unnatural sex with the inmates.

The instructor also allegedly asked for money from the visitors and took Rs 200 from each inmate every month for giving them beds.

At the directive of the DM, another FIR was lodged against Harishchandra Jha last night for sexually exploiting the children.
