Badrinath, Kedarnath to reopen on May 4

Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN: The higher Himalayan shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath will reopen for darshan on May 4. The Sikh shrine of Hemkunt Sahib will reopen on May 5. Announcing this here on Monday, Uttaranchal Tourism Minister T. P. S. Rawat said that all arrangements had been completed for safe and comfortable travel to these shrines.

Public utility centres

Special public utility centres had been established at several places where the pilgrims could rest, eat or get their vehicles repaired. Special instructions had been given to the Road Transport Authority, district and police officials to ensure that only "physically fit" vehicles with experienced drivers ply on the routes. Anyone found driving after consuming alcohol, over-speeding or moving with jarring music on would be taken to task to prevent accidents, Mr. Rawat said. Chief Secretary M. Ramachandran told The Hindu that efforts were on to make the tours to the hills more attractive by training local youths in hospitality.
