MCD steps up demolition drive

Sealing squads target around 250 shops in seven zones

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday stepped up its drive against unauthorised constructions demolishing many illegal structures in Rohini, West and South zones even as the civic body's sealing squads targeted around 250 shops in seven zones.

In the South zone, demolition drive was carried out at posh M-Block market of Greater Kailash-I where unauthorised portions and illegal extensions of several multi-storeyed properties were razed. Local residents and traders tried to resist the , but heavy deployment of police force brought the situation under control. However, the drive could start only in the afternoon.

In the South zone, the demolition drive was carried out in Kotla also. The demolition squad also cleared encroachments from government land at Kotla Mubarakpur in the Central zone, while in the Rohini zone, illegal structures were removed from more than three-dozen properties in Ashok Vihar area.

In the West zone, several encroachments were removed near Natraj Cinema on Durga Mandir Road. More than 50 unauthorised buildings of single and double-storeys were removed from public land.

In the sealing drive, the MCD squads targeted illegal shops at Timarpur, Kalkaji, Khayala, Vishnu Garden, Shakarpur, Pandav Nagar, Subhash Nagar and Tilak Nagar. Roads that were covered during the drive included Anandmayi Marg, Ravi Das Marg, Girdhari Goswami Road and G.T. Road (Shahdara).

A total of 48 shops were sealed in Sadar Paharganj, 40 were targeted in West, 25 in Civil Lines, 21 in Shahdara (South), 20 in Central, 14 in Karol Bagh and 11 in Shahdara (North). The MCD teams also de-sealed around 100 shops simultaneously, mainly in two zones -- Central and Shahdara (South).
