Two labourers die

NEW DELHI: Two labourers died after they inhaled some toxic fumes while cleaning a printing unit at Patel Nagar in West Delhi on Monday. The unit owner has been arrested.

According to the police, the incident took place around 3-45 p.m. when Ranbir and Neeraj entered the printing unit in the Ranjit Nagar area of Patel Nagar to clean it. They soon complained of dizziness and collapsed. The two were rushed to hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.

The unit owner, Ashok, has been arrested on charges of storing chemicals whose fumes allegedly resulted in the death of the labourers.

Fake certificates

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old man running a coaching centre at Dwarka in South-West Delhi has been arrested for allegedly supplying forged educational certificates. The police claim to have recovered four fake certificates, a computer and a scanner from him.

The accused, Pankaj Sharma, ran one "London School of Language" in the Palam Colony area of Dwarka. Acting on a tip-off that he had been selling forged certificates, the police sent a decoy to strike a deal for a National Institute of Open Schooling certificate. Pankaj allegedly demanded Rs. 6,000 for the document and took Rs. 1,000 as advance. Subsequently, he was arrested.

During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he had passed his Class XII from the Open School located at Sagarpur. After completing his graduation through a correspondence course of Delhi University, he opened a hardware shop at Nangloi in West Delhi, but suffered huge losses. He then opened the coaching institute and charged Rs. 500 from each student. Later, he began preparing forged certificates of Class X and XII purportedly issued by the National Institute of Open Schooling. At his instance, the police traced a girl to whom he had sold a certificate and a mark-sheet. Efforts are on to trace others who were cheated by the accused.

Contempt notices

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday issued contempt notices to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner, Executive and Junior Engineers of the Central Zone, and the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Lajpat Rai police station for not implementing an order for demolishing unauthorised portions of shops at Lajpat Rai market in Chandni Chowk area.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice S. N. Aggarwal directed the respondents to file replies within a week. The notices were issued on a petition by an individual submitting that the local body had failed to implement a 1998 order directing it to demolish unauthorised shops in the market.
