HASSAN: The Hassan district stands first in the list of districts, which saved power, by opting for biogas and solar energy and it saved 75 million units of power, according to Regional head of Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources, (MNES), Hyderabad, N.R. Raju. Participating in a meeting convened in the office of the Deputy Commissioner here recently to review the progress in the use of unconventional sources of energy, he said that the response to the use of unconventional sources of energy was encouraging in Arkalgud, Holenarsipur and Channarayapatna taluks in the district. Farmers interested in setting up solar and biogas plants would get a subsidy of up to 90 per cent. A 50 per cent subsidy would be extended to those keen on setting up mini-hydro electric projects. The Government wanted to create awareness among rural people on the importance and need to exploit unconventional forms of energy to maintain ecological balance, he added. The district administration had sent a proposal for Rs. 1.5 lakh to the Government for popularising unconventional forms of energy in the district and had spent Rs. 1 lakh for the purpose, Planning officer, District Advisory Committee, Mohan, said.
