Three members of a family murdered

SHIMOGA: Three members of a family were murdered at Gondichatnahalli in Shimoga taluk on Monday night.

According to the police, Srinivas, 23, a vegetable vendor asked his mother, Manjamma, 50 for a loan, and she refused. Enraged by this, the police said, Srinivas bludgeoned to death his mother; wife, Deepa, 20; and his six-month-old daughter Divya with a stone slab when they were asleep. Villagers saw the bodies in the house on Tuesday morning and informed the police. The police arrested Srinivas, who was found injured in an apparent attempt to commit suicide, and admitted him to hospital. — Special Correspondent

N. Ramakrishna is Home Secretary

BANGALORE: N. Ramakrishna has been appointed Home Secretary. He replaces Sudhakar Rao, who has been appointed Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister.

The following police officers have been posted as Inspectors-General of Police: Raghavendra Auradkar, Western Region; R.P. Sharma, Southern Region; and R.K. Datta, North-eastern Region. — Staff Reporter

K.V.R. Tagore promoted

BANGALORE: Commissioner for Information K.V.R. Tagore has been promoted as Additional Director-General of Police in the super-time scale. He will be posted for a day as Additional Director-General, Karnataka State Reserve Police, Bangalore, in place of A.R. Infant, who is proceeding on leave. Mr. Tagore will continue as Information Commissioner in the upgraded post, from the following day, an official release said on Tuesday.

Two held, 5 kg of sandalwood oil seized

BANGALORE: The CID Forest Cell arrested two persons and seized 4.56 kg of sandalwood oil worth around Rs. 6 lakh from them. Hameed, 42, of Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada and Siddique, 30, of Bantwal were arrested from a lodge in Cottonpet on Monday.

On a complaint by Venkat Shetty, police inspector, CID, Forest Cell, the Cottonpet police registered a criminal case under Sections 86 and 87 of the Karnataka Forest Act against the two. The sandalwood oil was brought to Bangalore without a valid permit, a press release from the Inspector General of Police, CID, Forest Cell, said. — Staff Reporter

`All those who live in India are Hindus'

SHIMOGA: It is wrong to equate the term Hindu with a religion. It is actually a way of life, according to P.V. Krishna Bhat, former president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and member of the Kuvempu University Syndicate.

Delivering the valedictory address at a symposium on Hindutva organised by the local Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh unit to mark the birth centenary of M.S. Golwalkar, founder of the RSS, he said all those who lived in India should be regarded as Hindus.

Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy, who presided over the function, paid tributes to Golwalkar.

Compensation

HASSAN: The Hassan District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in association with Advocates' Association organised a "Janata Adalat" in the court complex recently and Justice K. Sridhara Rao of Karnataka High Court inaugurated the programme, according to a release from DLSA. Justice Sridhara Rao conducted the proceedings for three days and disposed of 201 cases connected to motor vehicles disputes. Plaintiffs got a compensation to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crore from United India Insurance, National Insurance and Karnataka Government Insurance Department. He also cleared 52 cases related to Oriental Insurance Company and 47 cases of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Award

DAVANGERE: Yoga expert Sri Raghavendra Guruji of Anathasharama Malladihalli of Davangere secured the prestigious Pathanjali Award instituted by the International Institute of Health Science, Kolkata, and New Age International University of Seborga (Italy). The award was presented recently in Kolkata on World Health Day and Hahnemann's (founder of homoeopathy) birthday. Sri Raghavendra Guruji has been conducting free yoga classes for the last two decades. Rodrigo Carazo Odio, former President of Costa Rica, gave away the award. — Staff Correspondent

Woman dies

Raichur: Laxmi (20) reportedly sustained burns while she was in her kitchen, at K. Hanchinal village of Manvi taluk on Monday. She died at the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital here. The Kavital police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Cash stolen

Raichur: An amount of Rs. 15,000 was stolen from the house of B. Venkatreddy at Officer's Colony on Ashapur Road near here on Monday. The roof of the house was found broken. The Yergera police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Conference

DAVANGERE: G.M. Siddeshwara, Davangere MP, will inaugurate the fifth Asthma conference on May 7. Dr. Krishna, who has been treating asthma patients here, is organising the event along with a few other associations. Dr. Krishna told reporters here on Tuesday that 10 per cent of the population of the country was suffering from asthma. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: Department of Women and Child Development, Dharwad, plans to provide hostel facility to physically challenged girls from 2006-07, according to a press release. HUBLI: Several members of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a "rasta roko" near the BVB College here on Tuesday condemning the killing of Indian engineer K. Suryanarayana Reddy and the massacre of Hindus in the Kashmir Valley. — Staff Correspondent
