Nehru-Gandhi family neglected Amethi, Rae Bareli: Mulayam

Rs 1,026- crore package given, says CM

RAE BARELI: Stung by allegations of neglecting Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday held members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, who have been representing the two seats in the Lok Sabha since Independence, responsible for the `backwardness' of the area.

``The Nehru-Gandhi family or people close to them have been representing the two constituencies since Independence. If the areas are still backward the responsibility lies on them and not the State Government,'' Mr. Yadav said at an election meeting in support of party candidate Raj Kumar Chaudhary.

Alleging that there had been large- scale booth-capturing in this constituency in the past, he said it would not be allowed during the forthcoming by-election to the seat.

The Samajwadi Party has deputed one MLA at each Assembly segment of the constituency and a Minister at every ten booths to check any attempts at booth-capturing, he added.

He claimed that his Government had provided a package of Rs 1,026 crores for the development of Amethi and Rae Bareli in the past two years.
