BHOPAL: Over one thousand mill workers facing the agony of unemployment due to closure of the Avanti Cotton Mill at Sanawad that was being managed by the Madhya Pradesh Textile Corporation now look forward to returning to work as the Mill Workers' Society has taken over the responsibility of running the sick textile unit. The sale agreement between the State Textile Corporation and the Mill Workers' Society was signed in the presence of the State Minister for Commerce and Industries, Babulal Gaur, here on Tuesday. The State Textile Corporation is handing over the sick unit to the mill workers society for Rs. 5.21 crores. The sale agreement was signed by the Textile Corporation's Managing Director M. Gopal Reddy and the president of the Mill Workers' Society, Rajendra Sakalya. The mill was closed in 2001 due to continuous losses.
Special initiative
The Industries Minister had taken a special initiative and vigorously pursued the proposal to revive the sick textile unit when he was the State Chief Minister. Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Gaur said he had always remained sensitive towards the plight of workers as he was himself a textile labourer many years ago.
Many challenges
An attempt has been made to break new ground and it is a rare case that a sick textile unit was being handed over to the workers, he pointed out. The mill workers now face many challenges. To revive the unit, many requirements have to be met and immediately. The new management would be required to pay a hefty amount to the State Electricity Board to clear pending electricity bills.
