This Day That Age
The Chairman of the Chinese People's Republic, Mr. Mao Tse-tung, reviewed in Peking the May Day parade of more than half-a-million of his fellow countrymen representing nearly every branch of Chinese life. Probably a further million crammed the capital's streets to watch this spectacle, symbolic of China's greatest strength - her manpower is estimated at 600,000,000. For almost four hours they streamed past the Gate of Heavenly Peace which leads to the Forbidden City and from where Mr. Mao took the salute. But this year's parade had a difference, for, though there were plenty of slogans and banners, no portraits of Communist leaders were carried; in previous years there had been hundreds. The paraders shouted, "We must liberate Taiwan" (Formosa). More than 13,000 young pioneers carrying baskets of flowers chanted "Long Live Chairman Mao" as they filed past.
