CHENNAI: Last week, Cholai Action for Child Labour (Cholai - ACL) and the Child Rights Resource Organisation (CRRO) started a movement to empower disadvantaged children.
Central concerns
The education of children belonging to Dalit and Adivasi communities and the eradication of child labour are the central concerns of the `Movement for Child Rights'. Any child, between six and 18 years, belonging to a Dalit or Adivasi community can become a member of the movement by paying an annual subscription of Rs.2. T.V. Murali, Director, Cholai Group, said that most child labourers come from these disadvantaged communities. The movement will seek to protect children from social evils, such as child labour and sexual abuse, by empowering them and involving them in the process of developmental planning. This would, in turn, improve the quality of education provided to them, speakers at the event said. Aranga Mallika, lecturer, Ethiraj College; Vimalnathan, Director, New Entity for Social Action; and Thiruvengadam, advocate at the High Court, spoke. They emphasised the importance of child rights. Children entertained the audience by presenting various programmes and lit the `kuthuvilakku'. Life skills, self-analysis, personal development and child laws are some of the areas in which members of the movement would be trained. Public hearings would be held once in two months to find solutions to problems. For details, contact Cholai - ACL and C.R.R.O at their office at G4/H39, Seashore Apartments, 5th Main Road, Tiruvalluvar Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur. They can also be contacted through phone at 044 - 24410265 and through e-mail at cholaiacl@hotmail.com
