CHENNAI: Having your hand jammed between five bricks can't be a pleasant experience, but Deepika, 11, and Surendra, 7, displayed admirable levels of endurance, as 100 bricks were broken on their knuckles. By the time they reached 60, they showed signs of wearing out, but the impressed audience urged them on with applause and cheers, and they finished successfully. This was part of a tribute show to India's freedom fighters by Isshinryu Karate School, held at Subha Colony, KK Nagar. Narayana Swamy, a freedom fighter who heads the Tamil Nadu Freedom Fighter's Association, attended the event. Five-year-old Preetham stole the show with his performance "Kicks without landing". This involved him standing on his left leg and kicking his right leg up in the air 100 times without touching the ground. As his master Geribala aggressively counted out loud, Preetham determinedly went out, his face screwed up in concentration and effort. Another impressive feat was by Gautam, who plunged his hands into 75 piles of four tiles each, as if he was dipping his hands into a particularly yielding souffle. Other students kept themselves busy by having their hands run over by motorbikes and cars.
