CHENNAI: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) will decide on the applications submitted by pre-primary teacher training institutions seeking recognition, after the State Government puts in place a framework for curriculum and examination.

N. Mohan Das, Regional Director of the Council's southern regional committee, said over 100 institutions had sought recognition. A committee constituted by the Government was giving shape to the framework for pre-primary teacher training, he told reporters after inaugurating a workshop here on Tuesday.

M.S. Palanichamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, and head of the committee indicated that the committee would submit its report shortly.

Addressing the workshop, organised by the Open University and the Tamil Nadu Forum for Creche and Child Care Services (TN-FORCES), Mr. Das said teacher education was restricted to secondary and middle education. Little had happened in pre-primary and pre-nursery teachers training.

Prof. Palanichamy said 160 trainers were to be trained at two workshops. Xavier Alphonse, Member, University Grants Commission, said the programme would help the participants improve self-confidence and self-motivation.

Mina Swaminathan, co-director, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, said despite the significance of early childhood education, pre-primary teachers lacked recognition.
