Minister promises to look into grievances of beedi workers

A delegation from the Beedi Workers' Protection Forum met Nagaraj Shetty


  • The forum has demanded identity card for all workers
  • It has sought scholarships for children of beedi workers
  • Government urged to increase the amount of the labour welfare fund

    MANGALORE: A delegation from the Beedi Workers' Protection Forum, which met B. Nagaraj Shetty, Minister for Fisheries, Endowment, Horticulture and district in-charge, has come away with positive assurances regarding the future of beedi industry in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. A press release from the Nagarika Seva Trust, Guruvayanakere, quoted Mr. Shetty as saying that he was fully aware of the problems faced by beedi workers. "There are many beedi workers in my constituency of Bantwal. I will take up the demands placed by you with Labour Minister in your presence. I have already held discussions with the owners of beedi companies," he said.

    The major demands of the forum included immediate release of dearness allowance due to the workers, identity card for all workers and setting up of a hospital for the benefit of beedi workers in the district.

    The forum also sought scholarships for children of beedi workers and called for increasing the the labour welfare fund from Rs. 10 crore to Rs. 40 crore.
