Staff Correspondent

Serial numbers have been issued to 4,815 autorickshaws operating in zone one

  • A decision to demarcate autorickshaws based on their zones was taken on March 30
  • Autorickshaw drivers and owners instructed to obtain serial numbers on or before Wednesday

MANGALORE: The police authorities have extended the last date for autorickshaws operating in zone one to obtain serial numbers to Wednesday. According to an official press release here, the drive to provide serial numbers to autorickshaws operating in zone one was taken up between March 31 and April 30 according to directions given by the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority H.V. Parshwanath.

A decision to demarcate and identify autorickshaws based on their zones was taken on March 30 after discussions with office-bearers of various autorickshaw unions in the city. The process of issuing serial numbers was started a day later. Serial numbers had been issued to 4,815 autorickshaws operating in zone one and there were a few more autorickshaws in the city yet to obtain the number, the release said.

Taking this into consideration, the last date to obtain serial numbers had been extended to Wednesday, the release added. The release directed all autorickshaw drivers and owners, who are yet to obtain the serial numbers, to do so on or before the last date.

    Case booked

The Traffic Police have booked a case against an autorickshaw owner for wrongfully obtaining a zone one serial number despite possessing a permit for zone two (Mangalore rural). The incident came to light on Saturday when the Traffic Police Sub-Inspector inspected the documents and found out that it was issued with a permit for zone two.

Prabhakar Shetty, owner of the vehicle from Madyar, had obtained a zone one serial number for the vehicle. He owned another autorickshaw with a valid zone one permit and had obtained serial number for it accordingly.

However, he used this serial number on the autorickshaw with zone two permit illegally.
