MANGALORE: The district Anti-Rowdy Squad has arrested five persons in connection with a robbery reported at Lower Bendorewell under Mangalore East (Kadri) police station limits on April 27. The squad has seized two vehicles, two mobile phones and cash stolen in the incident. The accused had decamped with Indian and foreign currency worth Rs. 75,000. A press release from B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, here on Tuesday named the accused as Harish Poojary of Katipalla, Abdul Khadar, Imtiaz, Lokesh and Hasainar, all of Janata Colony, Surathkal. Police recovered foreign and Indian currency, one calculator and other records, besides the vehicle from the accused, the release said. The accused had reportedly waylaid Anil Kumar, a dealer in foreign exchange, when he was on his way home on April 27. Two of the accused sprinkled chilly powder on Mr. Kumar's eyes and took away the money kept in the front box of his motorcycle.
The accused then fled in a van that was trailing Mr. Kumar, the release said. The accused were arrested on Monday when the squad personnel intercepted a van near Pumpwell and questioned the occupants.
Convicted
The First Additional Sessions Court judge H.P. Sandesh has sentenced Thimappa Poojary, a resident of Manikemane in Ujire village of Belthangady taluk, to life imprisonment and fined him Rs. 500 for murdering Vasanth Poojary, his son, nine months ago.
