ERODE: Two veteran politicians will battle it out in Vellakoil. Erode district MDMK secretary A. Ganesamurthy is the candidate of the Democratic People's Alliance there. Two-time MLA of the Vellakoil constituency M.P. Saminathan is contesting as the Democratic Progressive Alliance candidate. Ganesamurthy was MLA of Modakurichi constituency and also represented the Palani Parliament constituency for one term. Vellakoil has been the bastion of AIADMK since 1977.
Promise to farmers
Both the DMK and MDMK candidates have promised the farming community that if they are elected a drumstick powder industry will be started and water supply will be given priority. They have launched an intensive campaign. DMK workers say that the MDMK candidate is a new face, but the MDMK candidate has countered it saying that he has already represented Palani Parliament constituency comprising the Vellakoil Assembly segment. Cine stars and veteran politicians campaigned for both. Desiya Mennetra Dravida Kazhagam candidate P. Jaganathan, BJP candidate S. Suriyamurthy, Bhahujan Samaj candidate M. Muniamman and Janata Dal (U) candidate L. Selvi are also in the frayThere are 1,55,401 voters in Vellakoil (76,696 men and 78,705 women).
