Electioneering hots up in district

Centre funded cycle distribution: Chidambaram

ERODE: With just a few days for the Assembly elections, the campaigning in the district has turned vigorous. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C. Ramasamy, is canvassing in Sivagiri, Elumathur and Kodumudi for the AIADMK candidate, V.P. Namachivayam. The Congress candidate, R.M. Palanisamy, campaigned in Kodumudi, Unjalure and Modakurichi.

Four instalments

The Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, electioneering in Modakurichi on Tuesday, said that the Centre had granted Rs. 31 crore to Tamil Nadu in four instalments, with which Chief Minister Jayalalithaa distributed free cycles to school students. The Union Minister of State for Women Empowerment and Social Justice, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, also campaigned for Mr. Palanisamy. Canvassing for the Sathyamangalam DMK candidate, L.P. Dharmalingam, the Union Minister of State for Textiles, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said the long-awaited Sathyamangalam-Chamrajnagar railway line was delayed due to Ms. Jayalalithaa. The work would begin once DMK formed the Government in Tamil Nadu.

80 villages

In Kangeyam, the Congress candidate, Vidiyal S. Sekar, canvassed in 80 villages on Monday and Tuesday. The PMK candidate for Bhavani, K.V. Ramanathan, canvassed in Bhavani, Appakudal and areas nearby. The AIADMK candidate, K.C. Karupannan campaigned in Kavindapady and Bhavani.

The DMK and AIADMK candidates for Anthiyur, S. Gurusamy and M. Subramanian, visited tribals in Burgur forest area. The MDMK candidate for Sathyamangalam constituency, T.K. Subramaniam, had camped for the last two days in Kadambur and Thalawady hill areas for campaign. He canvassed in Kannada in the hill area, where the voting population is 52,000.

In Erode, the DMK candidate, accompanied by men and women dressed in yellow campaigned in Periya Agraharam with a music band.
