VIRAJPET: The two-day fifth national postgraduate workshop of the Indian Society of Periodontology will be held here from May 5, according to Sunil Muddaiah, Managing Trustee of the Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences, which is hosting the event.

Specialists in the field and postgraduates are expected to take part in the workshop.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Dr. Muddaiah said exchange of ideas on a speciality subject such as periodontology would be another feather in the cap for the institute, he said.

    Competition

The institute had won the honour though there was competition from dental colleges in Davangere, Maharashtra and Kerala, he said.

The workshop would comprise live surgical techniques, practical demonstrations of medical emergencies and presentation of scientific papers by postgraduate students, Dr. Muddaiah said.

The institute was established eight years ago at Maggula village here.

"We hope to establish a premier postgraduate centre that will be a role model for the country by 2009," Dr. Muddaiah said.

The programme would be inaugurated at 9 a.m. on May 5 at Crystal Court here and a scientific session would feature a live surgical demonstration on "peroidontal plastic surgical procedure", which would be shown on television for the benefit of the audience.

The next session would feature surgery on "de-pigmentation" followed by a session on "implant placement" which would be conducted by an expert doctor from Poland, Robert Biesaga, Dr. Muddaiah said.

The afternoon session would have a workshop on "GTR & PRP application in surgical therapy" followed by a demonstration of "management of life threatening medical emergencies in dental practice".

The executive committee meeting of the Indian Society of Periodontology would be held at 6 p.m., he said

The postgraduate students would present scientific papers on May 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Valedictory would be held at 4.30 p.m., Dr. Muddaiah added.

Principal of the Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences Manoj Kumar, vice-principal Narsi Reddy, and organising secretary of the workshop M. Anil, were present.
