GULBARGA: IV Fast Track Court Judge V.G. Savadkar on Tuesday convicted and sentenced three persons to life imprisonment and imposed on them a fine of Rs. 2,000 each for killing three women and making an attempt on the life of former Communist Party of India legislator Sharanappa Bhairi in Chitapur town on March 8, 2004. Delivering the judgment in the case, Mr. Savadkar convicted Sharanappa, Shivappa and Kashappa for killing Lakshmibai, wife of Mr. Bhairi, and their daughters, Chandrakala and Renuka, and causing injuries to Mr. Bhairi. The judge, however, released co-accused Saibanna Bhajantri, Fakeerappa Bhairi, Basanna Bhajantri, Basamma and Kashappa as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them. The judge, who sentenced Sharanappa, Shivappa and Kashappa to seven years rigorous imprisonment on the charge of attempt to murder Mr. Bhairi, said the sentence would run concurrently. On that day, the accused raided the house of Mr. Bhairi and killed Lakshmibai and Chandrakala and assaulted Mr. Bhairi with lethal weapons. When Mr. Bhairi's daughter, Renuka, tried to save her father, she was also killed. Later, the accused surrendered before the police.
