CUDDALORE: The State general secretary of the farmers' wing of the BJP V. Kannan has said that both the Dravidian parties are vying with each other to lure the farmers by announcing waiver of the cooperative farm loans. But neither of them seems to have taken into account the plight of those farmers who have obtained loans from nationalised banks for agricultural purposes. In a statement issued here, Mr. Kannan said AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa repeatedly said that if returned to power, she would write off cooperative bank loans along with interest. DMK leader M.Karunanidhi too had been giving similar assurances. They had chosen nationalised banks because of less cumbersome procedures and lower rates of interest. But none of the political parties took into account these farmers who found themselves in a similar predicament as their counterparts (who got advances from the cooperative banks) during drought and floods.
